Dark Sky

The moon sets around midnight, and

my friend slaps my arms and

asks, Do you want to go

over the rooftops?

But I’m not even halfway to ready, so

I stay where I am

and watch them jumping,

coming closer and closer

to taking flight with each leap

It won’t be tonight

but it’ll happen soon

they’ll land in the air and stick there

like the whales returning to the sea

and all I will ever see of them afterwards

is the long curve of their wake

through the clouds and

maybe, just as the moon is setting,

a single wave

from a broad, bright wing.
