The Donkey’s Ear
I remember
when I was a child
and my father and me would not
explore the forest, we would drive
to the beach, running through
the dunes, pretending it was
a desert, or let stones skip
across the water. One day,
we found a really precious one,
shaped like a donkey’s ear –
not the kind you’d find in a book –
dark brown on the outside,
lighter in the centre and with
a kind of glitter or glimmer that
would sparkle in the sunlight.
Looking at it was like looking
at the star-filled sky at night.
We did not let it skip, instead
we brought it home, where
it earned a special place
on my treasure shelf, next
to the photographer smurf.
I don’t know what kind
of mineral it was. I don’t know
where it is today or where
it got lost along the way.
My father doesn’t even remember it
at all. But I still think of it
like a valued, but long-lost friend.
